Ballroom Dancing Comes to Barnes

December 5, 2017

The granddaughter of Percy Charles (Jim) Gray, founder of Barnes Cricket Club is almost 100 years later, ringing a new kind of port to Barnes Sports Club, in the form of Ballroom Dancing!

Caroline Williams and her dance partner, Paul Parsons, are looking forward to starting a new ballroom dance class at Barnes Sports Club, which will be held once a week from Tuesday 9th January 2018 from 7.00 to 8.00pm.

Barnes Sports Club has a rich history dating back to 1919, when the cricket and hockey pavilion was wheeled  down the road in a barrow from the former site, now Watneys, in Mortlake. The cricket ground is generally regarded as one of the most picturesque in London and the only venue in Barnes with a large garden, a barbeque area, spacious and private parking.

The dance classes will take place in the club room, which has plenty of seating and a member bar, where the dancers will receive a warm welcome.

Paul is a highly respected dance teacher, with over 30 years of experience teaching adults an extensive range of ballroom styles across all levels of ability. Having gained professional qualifications with three of the world's leading dance organisations, together with ongoing personal training with former world ballroom champion, Lynette Boyce, and Argentine Tango maestro, Eduardo Bozzo, Paul has the expertise to offer a blend of patient, friendly, knowledgeable and tailored tuition.

Caroline is especially passionate about introducing ballroom dancing to as many people as possible and is excited about the prospect of following her grandfather's footsteps. Caroline has many happy childhood memories of being involved in all club activities, as her parents, Ann and John Sealby were active members of the tennis club and Jim Gray, then club president, enjoyed playing bowls.

Paul and Caroline's  new class will be aimed initially at beginner and improver level and they hope to introduce classes for other levels in the very near future.

Launching  the class will be Rhythm Foxtrot, Cha Cha Cha and Tango Argentino, so if, in January, you will be lamenting the loss of Strictly, then we invite you to try "Ballroom in Barnes" for yourself!
